Curriculum

Our English curriculum aims to develop confident readers, writers and communicators with a love of literature. We achieve this through a structured approach including daily lessons, RWI phonics, and regular opportunities for reading and discussion. As a result, pupils become confident readers and writers, ready for the next stage of their learning.

Our Maths curriculum aims to develop confident problem solvers who can reason, think logically and apply their skills in everyday life. We achieve this through a structured approach using White Rose Maths, daily basic skills practice, and a Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach in KS1 alongside regular arithmetic in KS2. As a result, pupils are confident mathematicians who make strong progress and can clearly explain their learning.

Our Science curriculum aims to develop curiosity and understanding of the world, encouraging children to explore, question and the role of science in everyday life. We achieve this through thematic units and practical investigations that combine working scientifically skills with subject knowledge, both inside and outside the classroom. Pupils develop a love of science, make strong progress and are prepared for future learning and careers in science.

Our Reading curriculum aims to develop confident, fluent readers who have a lifelong love of books and can access all areas of learning. We achieve this through early phonics teaching using Read Write Inc., daily reading lessons, guided reading sessions and regular opportunities to explore a wide range of texts. As a result, pupils become enthusiastic, skilled readers who make strong progress and are well prepared for assessments and future learning.

Our Phonics curriculum follows Read, Write INC Phonics Scheme. This begins at the end of Nursery and continues throughout Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Information regarding this scheme can be found here.

Our key aim is to continue and extend the education which has begun at home and in pre-school provision to enable every child to develop an enthusiasm for learning throughout their lifetime.

Our Learning Means The World curriculum aims to tailor learning to individual needs, interests and aptitudes, enabling all children to fulfil their potential through the 4Cs of communication, conflict, conservation and culture. We achieve this through a broad, progressive and well-sequenced curriculum that promotes enquiry, creativity, first-hand experiences and learning beyond the classroom. As a result, pupils develop independence, resilience and curiosity, and leave St Paul’s confident and well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Our Computing curriculum aims to provide inclusive, engaging experiences that develop computational thinking, digital literacy and the knowledge to use technology safely and responsibly. We achieve this through the Teach Computing Curriculum, which provides a progressive sequence of learning in programming, computer systems, networks, data handling and creating digital media through practical, hands-on lessons. As a result, pupils become confident, responsible and creative users of technology who can apply their knowledge across the curriculum and achieve at least age-related expectations.

Our Music curriculum aims to provide inclusive, engaging experiences that develop musicianship, creativity and a lifelong enjoyment of music. We achieve this through listening to a wide range of music, singing in assemblies, and structured lessons using the Charanga scheme to develop skills in performing, composing and appraising. As a result, pupils become confident musicians who can discuss and perform music using appropriate terminology and achieve at least age-related expectations.

Our PE curriculum aims to develop the physical and emotional wellbeing of every child, building confidence, resilience and a love of sport. We achieve this through a broad and inclusive programme covering a wide range of sports, enrichment opportunities, competitions through the SSP calendar, and high-quality teaching supported by specialist leadership. As a result, pupils develop key physical skills, enjoy regular opportunities to compete and participate, and lead healthy, active lifestyles.

Our RE curriculum aims to develop religious literacy, helping children explore, question and understand different beliefs while reflecting on their own values within a Christian ethos. We achieve this through a structured programme following the local syllabus, taught weekly through the strands of believing, expressing and living, alongside opportunities to learn about a range of world religions. As a result, pupils develop respect, empathy and understanding, and are able to discuss religious and moral issues thoughtfully and confidently.

Enrichment takes place on a Friday afternoon and it is the chance for children to access activities that are an addition to the curriculum and they also have the opportunity to work in mixed age groups. The children will be split into Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 groups, with 10 groups all together.

The children follow a timetable of 4 week blocks, covering a wide range of activities including: Coding, STEM, First Aid, Cooking, Creative Club, D&T, Pottery, Sports and Nutrition, Premier Sports, & Music.
