Children's Health & Wellbeing
At our school, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of all pupils. We recognise that children learn best when they feel safe, supported and emotionally secure. Our aim is to create an environment where all children feel able to talk openly about their feelings and are supported to thrive.
Our Approach
We take a whole-school approach to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. This means:
Creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment
Encouraging open conversations about mental health
Helping children to understand and manage their emotions
Ensuring all staff are aware of their role in supporting wellbeing
Mental health and wellbeing are embedded across school life and underpin everything we do.
How We Support All Pupils
We promote positive mental health for all children through:
Teaching mental health and wellbeing through our PSHE curriculum
Raising awareness through assemblies and themed events such as Mental Health Awareness Week
Providing opportunities for children to talk and share their thoughts
Creating safe classroom environments where children feel listened to
Encouraging pupil voice and feedback
We also use supportive approaches in school such as: Worry boxes, Circle time and open discussions about feelings and wellbeing.
Identifying and Supporting Needs
Staff are aware of early signs of mental health difficulties, including changes in behaviour, mood or engagement.
If a concern is identified, we follow a graduated approach:
Assess the child’s needs
Plan appropriate support
Implement the agreed support
Review the effectiveness of the support
Support is provided on a case-by-case basis and may include:
Pastoral support from school staff
Targeted interventions, such as nurture-based support
Support from the Mental Health Lead
Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs), where appropriate
Supporting mental health is a shared responsibility across the school. Key members of staff include:
Mental Health Lead
Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo)
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
Headteacher
Attendance Lead
All staff play an important role in supporting pupils’ wellbeing and are responsible for promoting positive mental health across the school.
If you have any concerns about your child’s mental health or wellbeing, please contact your child’s class teacher or the school office. We are here to listen and support you.
